Cala Mariolu is considered by many the pearl of the Gulf of Orosei. The tradition says that the cove takes its name from the tale of a fisherman, Ponzese, that hided his freshly caught fish in a small cave near the beach. The fisherman did'nt know that in the Gulf of Orosei lived the famous monk seal, that came out of the water and ate the fish hidden in the cave. The fisherman, who couldn't find his fishes anymore, said "Acca basket Mariolu" ("here there is some thief"), and this exclamation gave the name to this cove. The original name was Ispuligedenie that means 'is like fleas made of snow'. This refers to the many small stones that form the white beach. Cala Mariolu is reachable by boat or along a difficult path to the southern part of the beach. One of the most suggestive part of Cala Mariolu is behind the large rocks that divide in half the beach: here you can dive into a natural aquarium.
