The "Sos Sirios" cave is located on the northern slope of the Codula di Ilune, in the Dorgali area. It can be reached from the sheepfolds of Buchiarta in about sixty minutes on foot proceeding in a southerly direction from the "Anzellu" sheepfolds. The approach trek crosses the enchanting landscape above the overhang of the Ilune codula.
"Sos Sirios" are the wineskins present in the cave and dating back to different periods ranging from the Neolithic to the late Nuragic. They were probably used to collect the dripping water inside the cave. To this day, about a dozen wineskins have survived the thefts that took place in the 1960s, most of which are now concretions in the rock. Fragments and shards are scattered in the various cavities.
There are two entrances to the cave. The most easily passable one is found on the small terrace at the lowest altitude, where you can admire a beautiful overhang on the Ilune stream.
After passing the two antechambers, you enter the main hall, adorned with fascinating concretions. You have to be very careful as the passage on the right to descend into the cave can be very slippery. The use of ropes is recommended. The main hall is completely dark and requires torches and adequate lighting.
We advise people without experience to contact professional hiking guides to discover this places, so important to our ancestors. We recommend maximum respect for the cave and the archaeological remains present.
